More Lists of Top Sailing Blogs

A couple of my favorite bloggers have recently published their own lists of top sailing blogs.

Joe Rouse at the horse's mouth has announced his first annual Popeye awards for excellence in sail blogging. And just to demonstrate that there are many superb sailing blogs out there -- or perhaps that Joe and I have totally different tastes -- this list has only two blogs in common with my own list of Top Ten Sailing Blogs of 2006.
Proper Course also makes the cut. (Where's my spinach Joe?)

And Ant Clay at SoulSailor wrote about his Top 5 Sailing Blog Experiences on Feb 21. Three of his Top 5 were on my Top 10. And he also gave Proper Course a shout. (Thanks Ant.) But interestingly enough not a single blog was on all three lists made my Joe, Ant and me.

I just have to say that I am thoroughly enjoying my new role as another pawn in the Joe Rouse-Tillerman battle for sailing world supremacy! Me and the surfing rodents. Most excellent.

And Dan Kim's even thrown his hat into the ring with the suggestion that Moths are fun...boy, yes, Moths look like a LOT of fun, but that's one thing I know the Sebago sailing committee doesn't own. I know for a fact they have Lasers & people who want to teach you to sail those. Since it's the Sebago Canoe Club, I'd think there's a reasonably good chance there is a sailing canoe or two on the premises.

No Moths...

You should have three in common, as Proper Course belongs on any top-10 list even your own.

Isn't that why Oscar never wins an Oscar?

Making and reading lists can be fun up to a point, and there's some real value in rewarding talented bloggers and helping sailors find interesting sites to visit.

Conversely, though, too much attention to fame in the blogverse (such as it is) might tempt some blogs to stray off course and run aground on some of the same compromises and gimmicks that are part of the instutionalized commercial media world and distract some bloggers from simply writing about what they love.

Blogs are well positioned, unlike traditional media, to specialize, to fill interesting niches, and to cater to the "long tail" of small, specialised audiences.

Gimmicks? Commercial? You mean I should write a post about the time Anna Nicole Smith went Laser sailing or weave some witty reposte to Joe Rouse using the words "faggot" and "rehab" in the same sentence?

JOE DID WHAT? I call for an immediate convention and arming of the Blogger Tribual & Angry Mob.

EVK4 said...

English Language alert!!! Did you mean Joe used the words and you will have a witty reposte? Or that your witty reposte will use the words.

It's hard to maintain my anger if I don't completely understand the situation.

Neither, I was merely demonstrating that political correctness stifles speech.

I have to say that I disagree with Pat on this issue ... so long as the participants aren't blogivating purely with the purpose in mind of making some top-10 list, I don't find anything wrong with people publishing such lists.

I will admit that I was disappointed not to be on your 2006 list after being on the 2005 list, but I'm not surprised, since what made my blog special in 2005 was my fiction, which has petered out. I kind of ran out of steam on the Wizards of Winds and Waves, and the other projects I've been working on have had enough commercial potential that I didn't want to risk copyright problems by making the work widely available on the Internet.

However, I do have a bit of a St. Patrick's Day treat that I will be putting up soon. Stay tuned for "What Do You Do With A Drunken Sailor?" -- a tale of an encounter between a leprechaun and a wiseguy.

Carol Anne - sorry to disappoint you by not including you in the 2006 list. There were some very tough choices to be made and I had to exclude some of the sailing blogs, including yours, that I still enjoy reading. To some extent I wanted to include as many new blogs on the 2006 list as I could; not much point in just republishing the 2005 list. And I did enjoy reading about all your Etchells racing and learning experiences.

Looking forward to the St.Patrick's Day treat. And good luck with your other writing projects.

Joe,

I happen to have run a post about Gisele somebody (a Victoria Secret model) windsurfing as a gimmick to reel in the crowds. It worked, too! I suppose Anna Nicole would have flipped a Laser (they flip, yes? Capsize? I'm a windsurfer...re boats I've only sailed Sunfish and once a Hobie...which we flipped.) Quality stupid items seem perfectly reasonable for the blatherverse.

Pat...I started my blog to stray off course and occasionally run aground.

(P.S. Joe, sincere thanks for including me in your catelog of sailing blogs.)
