The Finger

I don't know if my 6-week-old grandson Owen will grow up to be a sailor, but he has already perfected one of the essential gestures that all sailors should master.

Yeah, at this rate it won't be long before he drops his first F-Bomb!

it should also be said...

that this is a requirement for passing the Massachusetts Driving Test.

Mass adopted it from Jersey, isabs.
Primarily for traffic circle navigation, or as they say in Mashpee, rotaries.

And the first F-Bomb is always a Hallmark-scrapbook occasion!

"I had to give Grand Dad a sign of my displeasure when he suggested that I should sail a Laser instead of a Force 5."

Wow, this kid is good!

He's also mastered the other essential Boston driver's technique - no eye contact.

Joe, the Force Five was passe in the seventies. You must learn to let go, man! Holy crap.

Yeah, Baydog, I was about to say the same thing. The Force 5 was arguably a better boat than a Laser, but it was done before its first summer. Only the Banshee died a quicker death.

Unlike the Banshee, the Force 5 is still made...plus it's an American design, not Canadian. Have you ever watched South Park?

Never watched South Park. I bought two Kites turned them back to the dealer for two Lasers (within a month). Always thought the Force 5 was a superior boat but never regretted owning Lasers. Learned a lot more from them (all 5) than you did, watching South Park!
;-)

BTW, Lasers out-sell Force 5's. Do they also out-sail them?

Yes Doc. At my old club in NJ there were a few old geezers like Joe who still clung stubbornly to their Force Five fetish. Occasionally we would have combined starts for Lasers and Force Fives. Lasers are definitely faster, especially in marginal planing conditions.

Oh Joe, is that the best you can do? The Laser is a Canadian design? So what? Believe it or not there are some excellent things in this world that do not originate from the USA. Me, for example!
