Laser Sailing is Fun

One exciting night of Laser sailing on Lake Michigan. Filmed with a GoPro Hero HD, and edited with iMovie.

Kate Hayes is the daughter of Nicholas Hayes, the author of Saving Sailing, who emailed me the link to this hilarious video.

I was somewhat puzzled to see a Laser launched from a hoist but apparently there is no ramp at this site.

Enjoy.

Seriously. Laser sailing is fun. Sometimes. Really.

Sailing on water with mirror-like surface is challenging, but not fun. It is a consolation that those conditions present themselves in other venues than mine.

She should have put her full rig on.

Golf Day. That looks like Packanack Lake conditions to me.

A champion sailor once told me, "Good sailors make their own wind."

No wait.

I think I remembered that wrong.

Oops. I tried to remove a deleted comment by Meech and it seems to have removed a real comment by Meech that was a reply to Meech's deleted comment. Nothing personal Meech. Please comment again if you can remember what you said.

Hey Tillerman, you're missing the Orange Coffee Pot regatta today!

I am indeed Baydog. I am still recovering from my back injury and so haven't been Lasering for a while. The Orange Coffee Pot was one of my favorite regattas when I lived in New Jersey.

Not sure you have it all wrong. A good sailor can always fart around in the doldrums, but he can't always overcome the current.

Egads, I can barely use blogsite software! It appears she was sailing in Milwaukee and I was making joke about Windy city folks down south stealing all the wind. Jokes nonwithstanding, I was impressed and inspired by quality of this video - idea, editing, music selection, and humor! Perhaps she has a career in this!

It was excellent wasn't it? I wonder how easy it is to edit a movie like that with iTunes? Almost inspires me to get one of those GoPro cameras and have a shot myself. If anyone can stand a picture of seeing me waggling my legs in the air on a Laser!

Oops. iTunes? I think I meant iMovie!

Sailing IS hard on non-water proof cameras. Sigh...

Thanks, Tillerman, for the post. Meech, she may have a future in film, but as her dad and college career financier, I'm going to firmly suggest pre-law.

do you have a Mac? I'm not sure what the equivalent software is for a PC, but iMovie is pretty easy to use if you do have a Mac. the hard part, for me at least, is trying to wade through an hour and a half of GoPro video of a lot of the exact same thing, and piecing together a few exciting parts of it all condensed down into a video that will only be a few minutes long. Tweezerman told me his rule of thumb is about 3 minutes long, unless you're really good at editing - or else people will get bored.

I believe that is the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center. And yes, even a humble Laser must use a lift.

Yes my2fish, I do have a Mac now. I bought my first Mac a few weeks ago and am still finding my way around. Planning to start playing with iMovie soon.

You have been warned!

"once you go Mac, you never go back."

wait, is that how it goes?

I switched to an iMac several years ago at home - love it. takes a bit to get used to everything, but very fun and easy to use.

looking forward to your videos.

Yes. MCSC. The only dinghy center in the nation without a ramp. But we're working on it.

Actually, Rush Creek outside of Dallas is the same way. Not quite the same height as Milwaukee, but you still need a crane to launch a dinghy.

A crane for a Laser? Are your Lasers heavier than ours?
