9. Raul Aguayo
10. One. We all get lucky sometimes.
I knew this would be too easy for you guys. Between you, you've almost got them all. The photo was taken at the 1996 Sunfish Worlds in the Dominican Republic. The sails are the major clue of course. At Sunfish Worlds (at least back in those days) a fleet of charter boats was provided with specially colored sails, usually in the national colors of the host country.
1. Bibi.
2. Yankees
3. AOL
4. Macarena
5. My question was ambiguous. Santo Domingo is the nearby city. But there is a major USA city almost exactly due north of it.
6. Santo Dmingo is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas.
7. Dark and Stormy
8. Nobody has 8 correct yet. The answer is quite logical and obvious.
9. Raul Aguayo who sailed in the Laser class for the DR at the 2008 Olympics did sail in the 1996 Sunfish Worlds. He was 15 at the time I believe.
10. The answer to 10 is not 0 or 1, and it can be found online, but it's not exactly easy to find.
So 5, 8 and 10 are still unsolved.
1. Bibi.

2. NY Yankees
3. AOL

8. Tillerwoman

10. 2 (http://propercourse.blogspot.com/2008/02/just-another-practice-race.html)
Well done Panda. Of course it was the Bermuda sailors who were handing out Dark and Stormies after racing one day.
Litoralis and Panda both have #10 wrong. That post was about the 1997 Worlds in Colombia. This picture was 1996 in the DR. The actual answer is 3. (But he was only 15.)
#5 was a really bad question. I was thinking of Boston but Augusta is closer to the longitude where the photo was taken, even though it's not exactly a major city.
1. A liar
2 - 10. What the others say
The 1996 Sunfish Worlds results are actually pretty easy to find online and they show Master Aguayo coming in 57th. He had a pretty rough fifth race, finishing 90th, so you may have just nipped him in that one. He also had a DNS in the first race, so you probably got him there, too.
But curiously, there's no Tillerman listed in the results, so there must be at least half a blog post explaining why not.
I have several theories:
- You were sailing under an assumed name.
- You're actually, as I've long suspected, Dick Tillman and use an assumed name when you do anything but sail a Laser.
- You're actually Dick Tillman's wife, Linda, who finished 91st overall, and this nonsense about being a retired grandfather is all made up.
Oops, bad link.
Try this.
For some reason I am not listed (under any of my assumed or real names) in the results of the 1996 Worlds on the Sunfish class website. Maybe I upset the powers-that-be in Sunfish World with some of my comments on this blog about Sunfish sailors? Maybe it was because I let my class membership lapse? Maybe they are ashamed of me?
But here is a link to the class magazine The Windward Leg for Winter 1996 which includes full results, a long article and many pictures.
Thanks Linda, I'll check out the link.
As you will see from the results, I am neither Dick nor Linda Tillman. But I did get a nice email from Linda after my post back in 2007 Ten Reasons Why Sunfish Are Better Than Lasers.
JP, I gather you don't like Mr. Netanyahu?
I must admit when I started googling what was going on in 1996 it was kind of nostalgic and quaint to look at what was going on with technology and music and sports and realize (at least in the first two categories) how much has changed. But I was shocked to discover it was also the year that Mr Netanyahu was first elected PM of Israel. Some things don't change, it seems.
Augusta, Maine is a bustling metropolis of over 19,000 people! OK, so it is a tad smaller than Boston...
1996 not 1997? But how can you be in two places at once when you're not anywhere at all?
Linda? Or...Melanie Haber! Audrey Farber? Susan Underhill? (but "everybody knew her as Nancy")...
Panda, what are you smoking? I want some.
I was just observing that I've noticed differences between what Mr Netanyahu says and the truth.
But as it happens, no, I can't say that I like him.
Bibi went to the same college as my son, just not the same year.
I've noticed differences between what I say on this blog and the truth.
I'm high on the real things in life - a clean centerboard and a crisp set of sails....
Don't brush that centerboard, hand me the pliers.
I will amend the results asap. That was on a to-do somewhere...
Anyone can sail fast with a clean centerboard and a crisp sail. It takes a genius to be at the front of the fleet with a dinged-up centerboard and 3 year old worn out sail.
