I like Laser sailing.
I also like running.
On Sunday there is the first Laser regatta of the season at Fort Adams in Newport.
Also on Sunday there is a new 10 mile running race in Newport, starting from Fort Adams.
The run is earlier in the day than the regatta, but I don't think I am fit enough to do the run and the regatta back to back on the same day. I have to choose one or the other.
I haven't sailed any races in April so far. Done a few solo practice sessions but the regatta on Sunday would be the first opportunity to race this month.
I want to try and do one longer running race - 15k, 10 miles, half marathon - every month if I can. The race on Sunday is my last chance to do that in April.
Running the 10 miler would be good preparation for the half marathon I have registered for at the end of May.
Sailing the regatta would be good preparation for our Laser District Championship on the third weekend of May.
The running race is on a spectacular course along Ocean Drive and past the Newport mansions.
The sailing regatta is in the magnificent natural aquatic amphitheater of Newport harbor and off the iconic Newport waterfront.
The weather will be cool on Sunday morning - perfect for running.
The weather will be sunny with about 10 knots of breeze on Sunday afternoon - perfect for sailing.
There might be beer at the Laser regatta.
Hmmm.
What should I do?

Have a beer for breakfast, that takes the uncertainty out of the equation (there "might" be beer at the regatta). Then run to the yacht club and then race your laser. All bases covered. Problem solved.

Just ride a 10 miler another day. Obvious decision.
I think you will end up at whichever event attracts more young women in skimpy short pants.

I used to be a runner, and there was always beer at the end. Run the 10 miler at 80%, then go sailing.
If I were 40 years younger I might do that Oztayl. But I know that I don't have the stamina to do both in the same day any more. Even at 80%.
My life is already complicated enough trying to balance running and sailing and gardening and time with family. How am I going to fit in rowing too?
Oh O? I didn't think of taking that into account. But how do I balance that factor against the beer?
Run the course alone on Saturday and do the regatta on Sunday, Drink beer both days!
Easy, here are the steps:
1. Run the race
2. go to the regatta location
3. jump in the water
4. drink beer and talk sailing
Running a race is a totally different experience from running a course alone. I will have to write a post about that factor I think because other readers have questioned before why runners like to run in large groups.
But I do like your beer suggestion.

Actually I wonder if anyone would notice if I just show up at regattas all season and just drink beer and talk and never actually sail? Why bother with all that tiring sailing stuff?
May 8 is the first race of the three race Spring Series.
May 29 is the start of the six race Summer 1 Series.

Surely you must try both even if it means finally death on Laser as you predict.
Quite right. I will do the running race and the regatta... as long as all the other sailors agree to do the same.
Rowing would be kinder on the joints than running.
