Luna Rossa Breaks Course Record in Louis Vuitton Challenge
The 34th America's Cup just keeps on delivering more and more excitement!
Not content with running a whole series of challenger "races" that mainly consist of one boat racing around the course by itself, it appears that a totally new tactic has been discovered!
If the tweets today from America's Cup Racing can be believed, those clever chappies at Luna Rossa have discovered a way of completing a one boat "race" even faster, scoring a "finish" in today's "race" only 10 mins 1.8 secs after the start.
The trick apparently was to ask the umpires to disqualify their non-existent opponent 10 minutes after the start.
Brilliant!
I don't think I've ever seen such an audacious move before.
I almost peed myself.
What next?

It just keeps getting better and better. A bazillion dollars spent, scammed a major metropolitan city out of millions, turned sailing in to a world wide joke. What's next? Made for TV Lifetime movie starring David Hasselhoff as Larry Ellison.
I couldn't invent this stuff.
Maybe I should run a group writing contest for folk to predict what will happen in AC34 and then sit back and watch how reality will be even more bizarre than everyone's wildest imaginations.
Rename the AC34 to the WOFTAM cup. Waste of ...... Time and money.
Snore.........
1+ on that. I've pretty much given up on the Cup at this point.
I agree with all above comments to this point. The real yacht race on the West Coast is the Transpac. Friends are in 3rd place out of nine in their class.
The real yacht race on the West Coast is the US Laser Masters in Long Beach this weekend. One of my friends is currently in first place in his class.
Where are the headlines? Google? Yahoo? What?
What? You rank a yacht race by whose PR flak writes most about it on Yahoo?
I bet some of those so-called sailboats in the Transpac even have engines. And we all know that putting an engine in a sailboat is the worst sailing innovation ever.
#1 How to you rank a "real" yacht race?
#2 Engines are used to get boats to the start line. When's the last time your Laser on its dolly up behind your 10-speed and pedaled your way to the waterfront?
Generally accepted racking system for yacht races...
#1 Any race involving Lasers
#2 Any race involving other single-handed dinghies
#3 Any race involving other Olympic dinghies
#4 Any race involving other dinghies
#5 Windsurfing races
#6 Kitesurfing races
#7 Races involving keelboats without engines
#8 Races involving catamarans without engines
#9 Races involving "sailboats" that have engines.
And your answer to question #2: When's the last time you dragged your Laser on its dolly up behind your 10-speed to get it to the waterfront?
Usually I wheel my Laser on its dolly by hand to the water's edge and then I "sail" it to the start line if I am racing. The art of "sailing" to the start line is not really all that difficult. It can be quite good practice for the actual race.
You're awesome. Laser sailing without the use of either trailers or car tops! 38 times this year! Truly awesome!
