One of my favorite places to sail. Upper Narragansett Bay. I usually launch from Colt State Park in the bottom right of this map.
The Atlantic Coast Laser Masters will be sailed here in September, with launching off Barrington Town Beach at the top of the map.
But there is something seriously wrong with this map, a screen shot from Google Maps.
What is it?

never been but i guess those causeway/bridge things would get in the way somewhat, especialy as the dont seem to be joined to any roads (rhodes?)
When did they put in the land bridge?
There's also a second one from Rumstick Point to the Bike Path in Bristol. It must be new, because it wasn't there yesterday when I was there on the bike path.
Exactly. The causeways or bridges (or whatever they are meant to be) that appear to cross the mouths of the two rivers entering the bay, do not exist.
It would certainly be helpful if there were two bridges there. It is only about 3 miles across the bay as the crow flies (or the boat sails) but if you want to travel by road from Bristol to Warwick it's currently about 25 miles to drive around the north end of the bay via Providence and you have to go through some whole other state.
I am pretty sure that those "phantom bridges" only appeared on Google Maps recently. I wonder why? Do you knpw of any other examples?
You can leave a comment to Google to correct this. I have done this on a few occasions. dp
Thanks for the tip meech. I sent Google a comment.
There's another one here.
And over here.
There are actually two phantom causeways in that map of the waters near Wareham.
Yes, I should've said, "And more over here."
Coach Tillerman, I will be racing in the regatta you mentioned. Any tips? Start right, go 45 seconds tack, kind of formula for this area?
Actually I will be there for NA Masters. Same bay right?
Well, yes, it's also on Narragansett Bay. But I suspect the NA Masters will be held on waters a long way south of this part of the bay (unless we will be sailing 20 miles every day to the course.)
I have sailed regattas on this part of the bay - some Sunfish regionals and North Americans I think, and at least one Laser district championship. But I don't remember any useful local knowledge. Except the weather forecast is always wrong, the wind will always either die or have a major unexpected shift, and the beer at the yacht club is always cold.
I referenced the satellite pics and noticed that straight away. Hehe, I think Google maps has a mole in their midst. I wonder if SatNav systems would send you via those "bridges"?!
are we all getting a bit too picky, in the old days people were happy if their maps said "there be dragons" and "X marks the spot".
On a separate note I may have been filmed by the google car on the corner of 58th and Madison yesterday, look out for the revied street view, I'm standing next to the bunch of girls waving and shouting "that's so cool" - the google car that is not me.
I did go for a sail on this part of the bay yesterday and those causeways definitely aren't there.
