Two whole months - so annoying. Actually have already had to turn down another sailing opportunity as it would have required a couple of months to do it justice.
Yes, it does mean that many people who work for a living won't be able to take so much time off to participate in this. I can imagine it might be very attractive for a college student to do during his or her vacation. But it might also be a good fit for an older person without work commitments for whatever reason.

Why do only teachers get to take sabbaticals?

When the GPS goes out and they can't get a good noon sight on the sextant and the captain is lost, Mitch can post a photo of the smudges on the horizon and one of his readers will be able to tell them exactly where the ship is and what Revolutionary War battle was fought nearby.
GPS? On a whaling ship? Captain Ahab didn't need no stinking GPS.
Maybe Capt Ahab didn't need a GPS but do we really want to end up where he did? And I have never detected a whale in in any of Exploratorius' smudges. But I have never won any of his quizzes either.
Captain Ahab didn't need no stinking blogger to hype his voyage on Facebook, either.
But times change. Ahab's most memorable legacy is a string of coffee shops that serve Caramel Frappuccinos and this boat is chasing a virtual whale.
I wouldn't be surprised if the blogger calls himself iShmael.
