There's a bit of a storm hitting southern New England this weekend. As I write on Saturday, the temperature is in the 40s, it's raining steadily and there's a northerly wind of about 20mph. Tomorrow the winds are supposed to increase to 25mph gusting to 40, and there might be snow. The manly men of the Newport Laser frostbite fleet have even postponed the famous Fat Boys Regatta because of the weather.
We were thinking of going to watch our 6-year-old grandson, Aidan, play his last soccer game of the season in Foxboro, Massachusetts today. But Tillerwoman and I decided that standing around on a muddy field in the rain and wind and cold wouldn't be much fun. So we wimped out.
But the game went on…
Aidan
This boy has British blood in his veins.
So do I. But I am old and he is young.

And anti-freeze!
That's from the Prestone side of his family.
In sailing and soccer, there can be rain. In baseball? Only tears.
You can play baseball in the snow.
Doc, there are plenty of tears in soccer. Please
Is there crying in sailing? I bet that topic would generate some interesting blog posts!
No free pass for aging.
No free pass for aging? Laser masters sailors get a one point per race advantage for every 10 years of aging over 35. Not that it ever does me much good.
There's most certainly crying in sailing. I shed a few tears while on my first solo sail on my neighbor's Sailfish...part scared, part frustrated, totally wanting to go back to the beach.
I think a lot of kids have at least one cry when learning to sail. I've seen an older kid cry when he didn't win the big race of the season when he thought he should have done.
And even one lady at Minorca Sailing this year confessed that she lost it when she capsized her Laser while on the Sea Sail and couldn't initially do a capsize recovery. She told us that she felt a lot better when a handsome young male instructor came across in a RIB and said, "Look at the sea. Isn't it a beautiful colour?"
I had three boys playing soccer this fall season, and these last two weeks or so we had several rainy and very cold games. I used to like playing in the rain as a teenager, but as a spectator it can be brutal.
That's a pretty sweet trophy!
I think it is only a trophy bought by his own coach which he gave to every boy on the team. But even so, Aidan looks pretty pleased about it as I suspect it's the first time he's ever won any kind of trophy.
Trophy=incentive,... regardless
