Where am I?

It's Throwback Thursday.

Where am I?

When was this photo taken?

Is that a Sunfish? Of course not. But what is it?

Google Guess :-D Hayling Island, in a 12 foot dinghy?

It looks very like the first dinghy I ever sailed in with my father, early-mid 1980s, on a holiday in the Norfolk Broads. It came with oars and a seagull outboard. We've sailed ever since. No idea "what" it is though.

R1 has it! Where, what and when. It is indeed the Norfolk Broads. It was the tender we were provided when we rented a motor cruiser for a family vacation in 1985 (or thereabouts.) I'm pretty sure ours didn't have an outboard - just oars and a sail. And I don't think it is part of a recognized class with a name.

Is that a "dipping lug sail" or something like that which I have completely forgot

My father reminds me it was June 1986 (Mexico World Cup) when we were there. We paid extra for the outboard. Yours looks like a clinker but I'm sure ours wasn't having seen a photo recently. It did have a metal centreboard that lifted on some sort of hinged handle, I think. We learned how to crash gybe in no time and still do.

Fantastic fun. It should be an Olympic class with parent helm and under 16 child crew.

This isn't the oldest picture of me sailing - I was already into Laser racing by 1985 - but it was a boat like the one in the picture in which I made my first attempts to sail. That was back in 1968 when some college friends and I rented a motor cruiser on the Broads. I had never had any sailing lessons - or any knowledge of how to sail really - but I took out the tender on my own a few times with the sail up and tried to learn to sail by trial and error. Mainly error. I don't think I have any photos of that 1968 experience so this one will have to do.
