What a weird week...
It started with the sad news from Elephant Butte Lake of a sailor apparently lost in a freak accident.
Also...
I ran a half marathon...
Greece is melting down...
My son bought a powerboat...
The Gulf Coast is drowning in oil...
The New York stock market is apparently out of control...
Britain is heading back to the 1970's era of hung parliaments and minority governments....

And I didn't write a blog post all week. I have no idea why not. I did do lots of bloggable stuff. Even went sailing. Weird...
To cap it off, this evening around 7pm Tillerwoman and I were watering her vegetable garden... when HMS Bounty sailed past our house. Not the Mel Gibson/ Antony Hopkins Bounty. The Trevor Howard/ Marlon Brando one.
It's not every day that you see Bounty sail past your house.
What next?
I think I'm going to go to bed now.

To bed now. Where did I read that?
My problem lately hasn't been falling asleep, but when I wake up early to, you know, and then get back in bed, all of the events that you mentioned are swirling around in my head, and they have background music to boot that I just can't shake. Invariably, I finally doze off minutes before the alarm goes off.
I'm going to bed now.
The Bounty? Very cool
Did you include or invent most of that other stuff just to hide the part about the powerboat?
It may seem weird that the son of a sailor would buy a powerboat. But it's not really. He has very good reasons. And I have no reason to hide it. I'm looking forward to go visit him soon and have a day out on his new boat with him. And then blog about it. Proper Course is now a powerboating blog.
The Proper Course is now a power-boating blog? What can possibly be proper about a powerboat's course? Other than being anchored on one end of a starting line?
You can easily change the name of a blog anytime, you know....
You can change the name of a blog?
I didn't know that.
Wouldn't it be unlucky, like changing the name of a boat? Is there some special ceremony for renaming a blog to appease King Evan?
What would I call my blog anyway? Why does it need a name anyway if it doesn't come when you call it?
As the son of a sailor, I'm sure he'll have a good respect for sailors.
The fishermen are also usually good neighbors on the water.
It comes down to an issue of Truth-in-advertisement, Tillerman.
Aha! So Tillerman too has joined the Dark Side.
Our victory is assured!
Hmm ... "sailed" past your house ehh. No wonder your son bought a powerboat! ;-) ... still pretty cool.
Truth Doc? If you're looking for truth here you are going to be badly disappointed. All of the best stuff here is fiction, exaggeration and lies.
Anonymous... actually to be truthful for once, the Bounty didn't sail past our house. It motored past with a bunch of tourists on board. It's only a damn powerboat after all.
A wolf in sheeps' clothing then.
Sadly Baydog, I have been informed that it is quite common for so-called sailing boats to have engines. Though I'm pretty sure the original Bounty didn't.
Your misinformed, Tillerman. Some motorboats have sails.
Busted. If it makes it any better, I have absolutely no idea how my engine works, promise. Except, if I let the fuel tank run dry, with diesel, I can't just fill it up and start the engine again. Huh??
What is the matter with you people? I write a post about ecological disaster in the Gulf, financial and political crisis in Europe, markets in turmoil... and all you care about is whether I might occasionally mention power-boating on this blog?
Get a grip people. The sky is falling!
First things, first. And always, Tillerman!
At most newspapers there are a series of meetings throughout the day to decide what will run in the next day's edition.
The most important of these is the 'A1' meeting where editors choose which stories will run on the front page, and, in particular, which will be the lead story.
Editors are looking for the one story they think will most grab the reader's attention - the one that's most unique and 'newsy' - from the hundreds of local, national, and international stories that come flowing in from the wires and from staff.
Sometimes that story is the 'man bites dog' story - the ordinary made extraordinary by a peculiar turn of events. In your list, the only one that jumps out as a surefire stopper is Tillerman at the helm of a powerboat.
We'll need a sidebar on the relative numbers of sailboats and powerboats in the US. Have Graphics do a two-column chart on the differences between a powerboat and a Laser. Let Online know about Tillerman's blog so they can link to it.
And make sure you keep Photo in the loop on this one.
