Photo Quiz

Having discovered a satellite image of one of Larry Ellison's old IACC yachts moored on a tiny pond outside of Oracle HQ last week, I started wondering what other sailing boats I could discover on Google Earth. But then I thought, hey I'm a dinghy sailor not an America's Cup sailor, I should search for dinghy sailing venues.

So for today's Photo Quiz, I challenge you to name these five locations, all clearly hotbeds of dinghy sailing...

No. 2 is Rutland sailing club, England, but having sailed nowhere more exotic than Whitstable I'm struggling for any of the others!

Nige r is correct. Well done! #2 is Rutland Sailing Club in England of which I was a member from 1986 to 1988. I have written about it several times on this blog. Perhaps my post Rutland sums up best how I feel about the place.

O Docker is correct - #1 is indeed on Fornells Bay in Menorca, more specifically it shows the area of beach where Minorca Sailing operates. I have written a number of posts about Minorca Sailing too. Minorca Sailing 25 Years Later gives you a good overall feel for the place.

Baydog is wrong on #3 and #4. I have indeed written extensively here about Bitter End Yacht Club and the Laser Center at Cabarete, but anyone who has been to either location would know that they don't look anything like these two pictures.

Baydog is correct as far as he goes on #5. I wonder how he worked it out. But I need a more specific answer.

5. Clearwater Community Sailing Center.

O Docker - the wizard of Google - (how does he do it?) is correct again. #5 is Clearwater Community Sailing Center in Florida.

It actually faces the bay side of Sand Key but, as Baydog guessed(?) that is on the Gulf of Mexico side of Florida.

Kurt and Meka Taulbee operate their SaiFit sail coaching and fitness business out of CCSC. I have been there several times and written several posts about it here. Check out Mashers Gone Wild for example.

So that leaves #3 and #4. I guess it's not much of a clue now to say that I have sailed at both of them and have mentioned doing so on this blog.

#5...yep Clearwater Community Sailing Center!!

A MLSA sailor would know #3 in an instant. But where are the geese?

# 4 is Sarasota and # 5 is the Clearwater CSC

Correct Chris. #5 had already been correctly identified by a previous commenter. #4 is indeed the Sarasota Sailing Squadron in Florida. I sailed there in the 2000 Sunfish World Championship. You can find a post about it at Floridian Freethinker.

Is that a clue or your answer?

O Docker said...

Another clue.

Well, Anonymous and O Docker seem to know the answer to #3 but are being somewhat coy in giving a complete answer.

It is indeed Island Beach in Mountain Lakes NJ, the home of Mountain Lakes Sailing Association aka Sunfish Fleet 17, one of the oldest Sunfish fleets still in existence. I sailed with them from 1989 until about 2004. The photo shows a typical summer Sunday morning scene with a dozen or so Sunfish pulled up on the beach, prior to or after racing. (Or possibly it might be of one of the weekday afternoon junior program days.)

I have written about this club several times on this blog. See, for example, Mid-Atlantic Mediocrity.
