Where am I?

Where am I?

Clue #1: If you think the answer is the obvious one, then you haven't been following the other quizzes on this blog.

Clue #2: This is supposedly a sailing blog. So there might be some chance that the place I am at has some vague, tenuous connection to sailing. Maybe.

Clue #3: This will only make sense to readers who also follow the quizzes on Mitch Zeisslers's blog. This is not a Starbucks. It's not in Idaho or Maryland. But there is sort of a connection with space cameras.

Go for it.

The Ocean Explorium that's occupying the New Bedford Institution for Savings?

Ding Ding Ding. Right first time. How did you do it?

I simply looked at your photo. The answer is there.

There is some writing that I can't quite read on the inside of the vault door, but I'm guessing that is the name of the safe company anyway. Or is there some location metadata hidden in the jpeg that you were able to read?

Ding, ding, ding -- you got it. The safe company name -- Damon Safe Company.

I ran with that on the interwebs and -- lo and behold -- there are images of the vault in the Ocean Explorium that aren't anywhere near a match visually, but the site sorta, kinda followed your clues... so I made a lucky guess.

My initial guess -- without looking real carefully at the image -- was that it was the original vault for the Auld Mug of the America's Cup races. But why would you be in New York? That's when I drilled into the image.

Cool. Well done. Yes, we were there with the 3 oldest grandkids yesterday.

It doesn't look like much when you first walk into the old bank hall, but there is so much interactive stuff for kids to do and learn about all sorts of ocean life topics. And I got into such a fascinating discussion about the sex life of corals with one of the (female) instructors that my wife eventually had to drag me away from her.

With a rolling pin? :D

No. It was actually time to watch my granddaughter feeding the fish in the reef tank. One of the many cool features - kids can sign up to participate in various "feed the animals" sessions at the explorium.

Look for some amazing talent to hit the water this weekend with the Laser Master New England Championship starting tomorrow. 38 of the top 35+ year old Laser sailors will compete for this regional championship.

Thanks Dave. But in all modesty I have to say that only 37 of the sailors are as good as you describe us.

I should have included "quotes" as it was copied and pasted from http://www.eastbayri.com/. Must give credit where credit is due. Anyway, sail fast and show the other old salts how it's done :)

In the end 53 sailors signed up for the NE Laser Masters. A lot of top Laser sailing talent there.

I had a tough day. Not having raced a big fleet regatta since last year I was very much off my form. Made stupid mistakes (some very blogworthy) in each of the first 4 races, but eventually got my act together in race 5 and scored a 22nd. Currently 3rd Great Grandmaster which would put me on the podium tomorrow but don't count on it.

Sailed pretty badly on Sunday too but managed a 6th in one race and to win some silverware for 3rd place in the "Incredibly Old Geezer We Are Amazed They Can Still Sail At All" Age Group.

I bet you are a bit sore in a few of those incredibly old muscles this morning. That was quite a bit of racing for one weekend. Newpawt is a nice plase to sail and people watch. There are a few pretty good rehydration venues as well.

Not too bad thanks Dave. Sure, I was tired on Sat and Sun evenings but there were no significant aches and pains left on Monday. Even went out for a run over the new Sakonnet Bridge in the morning. Maybe I'm not as unfit as I thought.

You're where the Jomos keep their recipes for knobs, kale, gravy, and mashed rutabagas.
