Don't Rock My Boat

Bob Marley would have been 70 today.

He died, way too young, in 1981, aged only 36.

The Jamaican Prime Minister's eulogy at his funeral included these words…

His voice was an omnipresent cry in our electronic world. His sharp features, majestic looks, and prancing style a vivid etching on the landscape of our minds. Bob Marley was never seen. He was an experience which left an indelible imprint with each encounter. Such a man cannot be erased from the mind. He is part of the collective consciousness of the nation.

And why did he die? It was something like he didn't want a toe to be amputated to save his life? Take my leg, please!!

That is correct Baydog.

In 1977 it was discovered that Bob had a skin cancer under a toe nail. It was recommended to him that the toe be amputated but he declined for religious reasons. A Bible verse that Rastafarians hold as very important is Leviticus 21:5 - "They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in the flesh." The cancer spread to his brain and ultimately caused his death.
