Worst Sailing Innovation Ever

"Worst Sailing Innovation Ever" is the title of this month's group writing project. Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to write a few lines about what innovation, new idea, or invention has been most detrimental, most frustrating, most disastrous... just generally the worst... for the sport of sailing. Explain what the innovation is and tell us why you think it is so awful.

We had a lot of fun a couple of years ago with a similar project on Best Sailing Innovation Ever. We had 25 entries ranging from The Planing Hull to Spinach, and The Triangular Sail to The Bowline. I hope you will be just as creative in addressing the opposite topic. (It's "opposite day" as my granddaughter likes to announce.)

There must be at least one sailing innovation that totally ticks you off. If you're a wooden boat fan maybe it's the introduction of mass-produced fiberglass sailing boats. It might be a technical innovation or it could be something to do with the way that the sport is organized or promoted. Perhaps you think that the America's Cup is the worst thing that happened to sailing? Or professionals in our sport? Or stupid ocean racing records like youngest person to navigate all southern capes wrong way round with one hand tied behind their back? Perhaps sailing blogs are the worst thing to happen to our sport in your view? Or is there one knot that drives you crazy?

Whatever your choice of subject, feel free to have a good rant. I love a good rant. Perhaps that's why I get so many negative comments on my blog.

Same rules as usual...

1. Write a post on your blog on the subject of "Worst Sailing Innovation Ever".

2. Once you've posted your story, let me know about it by sending an email to tillermeister@gmail.com including a link to your post. If you don't have a blog just email me the story and I will post it here. Please let me know about your post, or send me your story, before Monday 15 February. Choose a unique title for your story please. I don't want 30 posts all entitled "Worst Sailing Innovation Ever".

3. I will post here two links to your story. Every day or so I will write a post listing any new entries in the project. Then at the end of the project I will provide a summary post with links to all of your articles about the worst innovations, ideas and inventions.

Please participate in this project. Do it for fun. Do it to get something off your chest. Do it to so that new readers will find your blog. Do it to express your anger. Do it to provoke others. Do it to annoy me.

Oh for Neptune's sake, just do it.

Surprise me.

My entry, sir, is the ubiquitous topsider. Is mine a favorite blog yet or do I need to do more race reports?

More race reports would definitely be welcome. Especially ones that feature rodents.

Technically, we never saw the rodent. We assume he's still in the barn wondering what happened to the big bag with his house in it.

verification "peess"
Ummm, I'll interpret that one as "peace" instead of something else.

Oh, I shouldn't start guessing winners so soon. Pat's line just cracked me up.

I notice that one of the contenders is the automated starting system.

The funny thing is that I first learned about the Ollie Box through your own post from the BEST innovation challenge!

blech, sorry, what a mess I have made of your comments!

Bonnie, you needn't have confessed. Everyone would have just assumed the deleted comments were for Joan's Scantily Clad Cyprus Escort Service or some such.

By coincidence, I got to use an "Ollie" auto horn system a couple of weeks ago in Arizona. It's a slick system.

I've loaded a few hundred pictures of the regatta on my rgscpat Picasaweb site. The regatta was on track to raise more than $60,000 for the Leukemia Society.
