I Hate Blogger's New Google+ Comments Feature

One of the bloggers whom I follow recently enabled a new feature which forces people who want to leave comments on his blog to create a Google+ profile.

It appears that I can no longer leave comments on this blog using my Blogger profile "Tillerman."

I can't even create a Google+ profile with that name because it's already taken.

The few of my fellow bloggers who have left comments on this blog are all now appearing with different names too.

I hate this.

I don't want to create a whole new identity for myself in the blogging world.

I won't be leaving comments on any blogs which enable this weird feature.

I certainly won't be enabling this feature myself.

Or have I misunderstood how this apparent abomination actually works?

On one hand I feel your frustration but on the other hand it might be a fun thing to be a chameleon and create a new identity every now and then. Instead of being the "diarist" maybe I could reinvent myself as the "lutefisk" and perhaps call my site the "fresh tripe blogspot" instead of Mid-Atlanticmusings. The possibilities to be creative are endless.

I'm equally baffled by this.

I've avoided creating a Google+ ID for lots of reasons, and I didn't want to, just to comment on a blog.

So, I tried using 'O Docker' as a name for the Google+ dialog box, it seemed to accept that, the comment appeared for a few seconds, but now seems to have disappeared.

So, unfortunately, I can't comment on that blog, either.

If it's the same blog you're discussing, the blogger had comment moderation turned on to filter out spam, I think. But comment moderation interrupts some of the natural conversational flow that happens when comments appear as soon as they are written.

And sometimes it makes it hard to figure out who was first to come up with the right answer to a blogging puzzle.

Life in the post-modern blogging age has gotten so complicated.

I'm commenting with my same ol' moniker......

I just don't like waiting for your approval before my comment appears...

I don't like comment moderation either. I don't like it as a commenter. And I don't like having to moderate comments here. But I was getting so much spam that the only alternatives were to turn on moderation or captchas... and I hate captchas even more. But if most of my regular readers prefer the latter I will go that way.

What other alternatives are there? Maybe I should go to Wordpress?

I made the same mistake of linking. This was a lame attempt by Google to get people to use Google+. How stupid, if you share your blog on Google+ it counts as a comment.

While I am ranting why did Facebook disable the ability to auto post one's blog entry to facebook?

Hey, guys -- I've just banished the Google+ comments on my blog.

Come back and play!

They're gone now, Doc -- please come back and play.

I was faced with the same problem -- too much spam.

Recently I got spammed by somebody that was irritated with my comment moderation for almost 24-hours, almost one spam comment per second for the entire time.

These new-fangled ideas that Google is using are just plain strange. It doesn't seem like forcing people towards G+ is really the best marketing method.

I'm think that G+ requires a name - not just an anonymous one. I could be wrong, though.

Come on over to Wordpress, though - I would sure make it easier for me to comment on your guys' blogs!

Can you suppress all spam on Wordpress without moderation or captchas?

Did you know that you can embed Google+ comments on any blog, not only Blogger? Cool!

Tillerman, I don't know if this is the standard procedure - but for my blog (and this was how it was initially set up for me) - I only have to moderate a comment when it is someone's first ever comment on my blog. after I have approved your 1st comment, any future comments don't require moderation.

the Wordpress spam filter is VERY good - it catches most spam and I never even see it. the few spam comments a day that get past the initial filter get sent to a "spam" folder that I can review - and they never show up on the blog (unless I somehow approve them accidentally).

a few comments get emailed to me for moderation - but if they are obviously spam, I can ignore them (and they stay in the "pending" folder), and/or I can mark them as spam and they get deleted from there.

oh yeah, and I don't think there is even a captcha option for me to turn on.

I was having the same spam problem and for a short time required all comments to be moderated. I noticed, however, that I wasn't getting spammed on new posts, just older ones, so I set comments moderation to apply for posts that are over 14 days old. This is working well so far and allows comments to show immediately on the current posts.

I used to do that Panda but then I started getting spammed on new posts too. That wasn't too bad if I was checking the blog every day because I could delete the spam on new posts. But then I went off the net for a week or so and when I returned there was a lot of spam on the newer posts. I think the volume of spam has gone down a bit lately so maybe I will try taking moderation off posts less than 14 days old again and see how it goes.

As they say in Hawaii, "Humbug, dat's why!"

Uh oh! And now the blogger (Mitch of Bone in its Teeth) who triggered my original comment has decided that "In anticipation of Google trying to incorporate more Blogger functionality into Google+" he has moved his blog to Wordpress.
