Bad Mommy

Just look at this.

That bloody Mommy Boat zooms right in front a sailing boat in the middle of a race and forces them to tack.

All because their boys dropped something off their boat.

Outrageous.

What next?

Have there been any protests filed? Seems this should have violated Rule 55, at least.

LOL. Yes Rule 55 would be a good one to use here.

The AC is using a heavily modified version of the Racing Rules. I have had a look through those and the SIs and I can't see any specific rule under which a protest could be filed for "mommy boat behaving badly" ...

Unless perhaps the action of Emirates' mommy boat could be construed as "outside help" in which case a Rule 41 protest would be appropriate. Forcing Luna Rossa to tack is surely "outside help" to Emirates?

And of course there's always Rule 2.

Except I see it has been deleted from the version of the rules that this AC is using!

In fairness, the sail in the water would have made the boat tack, or they could have borne away.

But I still think its a WOFTAM

It looked to me as if Prada was aiming to sail to leeward of the sail but then the chase boat forced them to tack. I can't believe that a support boat for Emirates can do that with impunity.

Does anyone know how such incidents are dealt with under the AC rules?

If I was being cynical, I'd suggest that perhaps Prada bore off towards the jib and chase boat in an attempt to cause an incident they could protest, if necessary.

Who cares? Why are you even bothering with this obscure, 8th-ranked event with 1-3 boats when you could be discussing a 1st-ranking US Laser Masters in Long Beach which probably has 100's of boats? (I don't know how many really, because I can't find mention of it.)

Litoralis - I didn't see any evidence in the video that Prada bore off towards the jib.

Doc - Good question. But a fiasco like the LV Cup is much more fun to write about than a real regatta like the Laser US Masters.
