Downwind Laser Sailing at Hyères

The 2014 Laser Masters Worlds will be at Hyères in October.

Registration isn't open yet but it will be soon.

To go or not to go, that is the question.

Don't toy with us. Is the Chateau booked yet?

We need one more to make up the 60 people necessary to book the chateau. Are you in, Baydog?

The question is Standard or Radial? According to several weather websites, the average October wind is around 7 - 9 knots.

Yes KR. That is another question. If I do go, this will be my first Masters Worlds since I turned 65 so I will be a Great Grandmaster. Prior to last year in Oman, the GGM fleet sailed in Radials at the Masters Worlds. Last year there was a Standard rig GGM fleet too. I haven't heard any official announcement as to whether this was a one-off thing or whether it will be the way at all future events.

If the average winds are as light as you suggest I should definitely sail a Standard Rig. Doug of the Improper Course blog sailed a Radial in the GM fleet at Oman and regretted it. He is much lighter than me too.

Why not a rooster rig? Isn't that an option?

Several weather websites? Could you help there please. I hope to go, but the lack of registration is a problem. The issue for me is a boat (AUS 197550 GM STD). Any idea how the Laser legal stuff is affecting this?

I plan to write a post on the weather although different websites seems to have different stories on the weather there in October. I have no inside information on how Bruce Kirby's lawsuits against the class and the builders are affecting this. They may even get to court before the Hyeres Worlds so we will have to wait and see.

No Doc. No Rooster Rig.

I want to go. I'l be a grand master. Are you trying to decide based on the downwind video? It looked like some fun.

I am trying to decide based on whether I want to go to Minorca Sailing in September or Hyeres in October or both and where would be the most fun for me and where would be the most fun for Tillerwoman and whether sailing an RS100 for 2 weeks in Minorca would be more fun than sailing a Laser for 6 days in France and whether I like grilled sardines better than frogs legs.

I think maybe I'll decide to procrastinate for a few more weeks.

I have done 6 Masters Worlds already so it's not exactly on my bucket list any more.

In my limited experience of Hyeres frogs legs are best avoided but, fortunately, not compulsory.

"Frogs legs" was of course a synedoche (is that the right word?) for French food in general. On the whole I think I prefer French food to Spanish food so that's a point in favor of Hyeres. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Tillerwoman just had a brilliant idea. Why don't we drive from Minorca to Hyeres?

Tillerman said...

And of course she's right (assuming that we would first fly from Minorca to Barcelona.) Then the drive from Barcelona to Hyeres is only 5 or 6 hours, but there are so many interesting places along the way that we could easily take a week over it. Do any of my readers have any recommendations of places to see and stay along there?

Hmmm.

12-26 Sep Minorca
26 Sep - Oct 3 meandering along the coast
Oct 3 - Oct 11 Hyeres

13 days of sailing in Minorca
7 days of sailing in Hyeres

Hmmmm! It's tempting!

Cadaques - not far from French border - the old hometown of Salvador Dali - nice little village, although can be a bit touristy in high season - but October should be OK..

And then why dont you and Tillerwoman check out Brittany, to rest up from Hyères. A lovely region with the sailing capital of France in Lorient.

Thanks KR. Actually we did visit Cadaques when I did the Masters Worlds in Roses a few years back. And we spent several camping vacations on Brittany when we lived in the UK and our kids were small. Both excellent places to see, but there are other towns and villages along the coast between Barcelona and Hyeres that we haven't seen yet.
