It could be Tillerboy somewhere in the UK in the 50s.

It could be. I have sailed on waters close to the spot where this photo was taken. Although we have never met, I am almost certainly only one or two degrees of separation from this man. We have a number of things in common. But it's not me.

But it is in the UK. And I'm pretty sure it's from the 1950s.

David Bowie

Not David Bowie, but this man and David Bowie do have something in common. And they did "perform" together at least once.

Where is O Docker when we need him?

Bing Crosby

Hmmm. Bing Crosby would have been about 50 years old when this photo was taken. And he's dead. The boy in the picture is not dead.

But he did perform with David Bowie at least once. I fear this person is going to be relatively unknown to us 'mericans....where IS O Docker when you need him?

I think this man is well known in America. Worked in America for a while and visits here frequently. Has appeared in a number of American TV shows. Has even been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

O Docker is making wild guesses on Facebook right now!

Frost?

Stephen Hawking?
He was born in '42, worked at Caltech and has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
And as for performing with David Bowie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyEsWs9CMK0

LaurenceFL has it! Well done! It is indeed Stephen Hawking.

And the "thing" he has in common with David Bowie (at least the thing I was thinking of) is that they share the same birthday - 8 January - although Hawking is 5 years older than Bowie.

Dave's guess of Frost, presumably David Frost, is definitely someone of the right generation who fits some of the other clues, but Frost died last year and I already revealed that our man is still alive.

Congrats to LaurenceFL.

Was doing my guessing over on your FB page, where you mentioned he won the Medal of Freedom. Going through the winners list, came across a photo of Hawking with Obama, but because of some bad assumptions on my part thought it couldn't be him.

Ah well, there's always next time.
