Semaine Olympique Française Hyères 2012 Finn Medal Race

One of my friends, who is going to the Laser Masters Worlds in Hyères later this year, was wondering what it would be like.

I take two things from this video…

1. Sometimes it's a bit windy
2. They speak French.

Thanks Baydog. You mean you can't get Cornish pasties in Hyères?

Egbert, don't be a luddy duddy. Don't be a moon calf. Don't be a jabbernowl.

What I take from this video is a memory of back in the days when I was racing Lasers on the nearby lake. One afternoon, I traded my Laser for a visiting Finn. The conditions were very mild. I don't (want to) recall which of us was faster; what I remember is how low the boom on a Finn is, especially on gybes.

I've never tried a Finn. Thanks for the warning Doc.

I tried a Finn a couple of times. I didn't exhale. I DID like it....

Did you get the bean reference? Shit, I'm sure you did

Sorry Baydog. That one went over my head the first time. Thanks for explaining.

The booms on Finns are very much like the booms on older Classic Moths--you kiss the keel on every tack and gybe. What I take away from this little movie is (a). how brutal and soul destroying Finns are in a big breeze (I sailed one in a regatta one time--that was enough!) and (b). how good these guys are at keeping the boats flat and driving on all points of sail. Amazing boat handling skills.
