Schell 2006

I didn't get to race in New England on Sunday and neither did my son. But some college dinghy sailors went racing in Boston.

Check out the MIT Sailing website for pictures of the Schell Trophy, and links to more photos. According to that site, the regatta was sailed "under extreme conditions both days: on Saturday 28-Oct we had 2+" of rain; even more exciting, on 29-Oct we had constant 25mph winds, with gusts going into the mid 40's!"

Amazing photos. What is missing from the photos is the smell of the wind-driven spray on the Charles after heavy rain like that. The sewers and storm drains in Cambridge still overflow into the river after heavy rains.

It was the most extreme sailing conditions I've ever witnessed. That was the consensus among all the coaches on the dock. It was wild, and wonderful. The audible "oooooh!s" and "oh my god!"s on the dock was a spectacle in itself. There were moments when I didn't know where on the river to look, because there was such wildness, carnage, and excitement in every direction.

What a small world it is, I was staying at the Harborside Hyatt on Sunday after attending a wedding in the Berkshires. Boy, oh boy, the wind was blowing hard.

I'm definitely going to have to clue Tadpole in on this ... He wants to sail, and he wants to study engineering and/or architecture.

Of course, it would also be more practical and less expensive to attend University Near Mom, Near Mom Tech, or Near Mom State. BUT ... if he keeps his grades up enough to get a scholarship at MIT, gee ... he could be sailing dinghies in conditions that snap Etchells masts.

I was fortunate enough to sail in the regatta. The sailing conditions were crazy but amazing. I could not have asked for a better time.
