I've played on wet fields before, but this...................

So THAT's how you bent the mast!

Oh man, I can see it happening as if I were there.

That Guy goes left, That Other Guy splits wide right, and Tillerman goes long.

Coverage from the blue fleet is tight, so, at the last minute, you tack onto port and head for the endzone, but all you can think about is yelling, "I'm in the clear!"

Too late, you remember about the uprights - and the crossbar.

Twang!

"Oh crap! What am I going to tell Tillerwoman? I just spent three hundred and twenty-five bucks and eighty-two cents with tax on a new mast. If she finds out about this Laser football, I'm grounded until after the New England Masters Worlds."

"I know, I'll pretend this never happened and the crummy new mast just bent all by itself."

"Yeah, that's the ticket!"

"All by itself."

"And then, I'll write a blog post about it to make it look good. I'll be indignant about how they don't make 'em like they used to."

Honestly!

I hate football, so this new game will just spoil sailing for me...now "Laser quest" will be a different game - Combine laser guns and laser sailing

Tillerman said...

Sorry ChrisP, not Tillerboy. Although the playing fields of Eton are on low-lying ground near the River Thames and are probably susceptible to flooding and I did sail a Laser only a few miles away from Eton, it's not me. Didn't go to Eton and never had hair that long.

Good guesses Baydog. It is indeed from the 70's and the sailor is a famous sailor from that generation that made Laser sailing popular in that decade like many of the others you mention. But not any of the names you cited.

Actually the hair is a better clue than you might imagine.

looks like a rugby pitch to me....

Baydog said...

Dennis Conner???

Tillerman said...

I think Dennis was winning the America's Cup back in the 70's, not hacking a Laser around a football field.

Baydog said...

Ya killin me. Who is it?

JP said...

Looks like a rugby pitch to me too, and Eton is just the sort of place that would get its fields flooded.... as to who, no idea.

Tillerman said...

Baydog.... one of your answers was half right.

Baydog said...

Peter Isler

Tillerman said...

Not Isler. But you are so close...

O Docker said...

California boy, new to the Grand Master fleet this year?

Baydog said...

Dave Dellenbaugh. But I'd never have known what the back of his head looked like!

Baydog said...

Dave Perry - he's a longhair

Pandabonium said...

A game Noah came up with I think.

Tillerman said...

You got it (finally) Baydog. It is Dave Perry.

Dave Wagner was half-right - but I think you knew that wasn't the right answer, didn't you? Dave Perry and Peter Isler both sailed for Yale and were both All-Americans in 1975, a year that Yale won the college co-ed championship. That's why I said Isler was close. And Dave Perry, as you say, is a longhair... or was last time I saw him.

Nobody has guessed the place yet. And somehow I don't think anyone will. I am reliably informed that it is Deerfield football field in the early 70's.

Dave Wagner was a little-known, local Jersey boy whose Dad bought Laser 802 in 1972. He didn't make much of a splash in the early days of Laser sailing. He was not ever really a successful skipper; always a more valuable crew.

Aaaaah, the golden age of Laser sailing, New Jersey in the 70's. Orange Coffee Pot. Legends like Skip Whyte, Gary Jobson, Dave Wagner... Where are they now?
