LOL, PB. My first thought exactly. I mean of the lemmings....

I though for a moment the title was about only us old folks going sailing these days.

My ironic heading was intentionally misleading of course. But there is a huge turnout at Opti and other junior class regattas these days. The challenge is to keep these kids in sailing when they are older and have careers and kids and mortgages and lawns to mow every weekend.

If their careers are successful enough, they don't need to worry about mortgages and the landscaper can mow the lawn...

Yes, but it will be a sad day if the only people who sail are the ones who pay landscapers to mow their lawns.

When will the landscapers get to sailing?

Tillerman said...

The landscapers should go sailing. Everyone should go sailing.

Or at least everyone should have something in their lives that's an escape from the daily grind.

Sailors don't have lawns; we have brown, weed infested, overgrown hayfields. Who wants to push (or sit on) a mower when the wind is blowing?

I've been trying to give my back yard, at least the corners, back to nature, but my wife won't have any of it. I remember seeing a picture of Paul Elvstrom's house in Denmark many years ago. The house was on the water of course, sandwiched between other houses, a modest two story with the entire waterside frontage a massive wooden ramp to the water filled with boats. I don't think "lawn" was in Elvstrom's vocabulary.

Good point John. I have one of those brown, weed infested, overgrown hayfields at the side of my house, but I prefer to look on it in a more positive light; it is really a very special native American wildflower garden. None of the neighbors have anything like it. And it doesn't need mowing!

I love this picture! As an Opti Mom and a sailing evangelist, I'm glad to see it in your posts.
