I will have to write a longer post about this very special day when my two eldest grandchildren went sailing for the first time. Suffice to say for now that it was a huge success.

One of the great pleasures of my life has been sailing with my daughters and now granddaughters, you are fortunate, enjoy!

Judging by the great big smile(s) it won't be the last time :)

Thanks guys. This is currently my favorite photo of all time.

But Emily looked at this post and asked why somebody (bonnie) had commented, "Yay Emily!" I explained that my blogging friend liked the photo and was pleased to see that Emily had enjoyed going sailing with her Granddad.

She said, "I don't like that photo."

I was shocked. Why didn't she like the photo? Had she decided she didn't like sailing after all (even though she seemed to enjoy it so much yesterday)? What was wrong? I asked her why she didn't like it.

"It makes my face look dirty," she replied.

What a girl!

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, half so much worth doing as messing about with grandchildren and boats.

At this age, she can be expected to complain about a shadow on her face. In a few years, she'll complain that lifejackets make everyone look fat.

But all of that will pass. When she becomes a real sailor, the only thing she'll notice in a sailing photo is how her sails are trimmed.

Too funny!

Actually I have the same issue with the original version of my current icon-thumbnail-thingy - I'm very red-faced and sweaty. But I was sailing in the BVI's and I was very very happy, and I think it shows, so I'm using it anyways.

Post written in 2012. How is it now? Is Emily a keen sailor? My own granddaughter is 13 now and cares more about her looks than doing anything interesting. Ah well! we'll see. We're all different!

Emily did not become an active sailor after this outing with me. She did come and sail with me once this year on my Laser, but her passion these days is dancing. She goes to dancing classes several days a week and is very good at it. I think it's good that she has found something that she is so enthusiastic about that she puts in the hard work to excel.

But she also tried kayaking once or twice and is begging her parents to buy her a kayak. I think it more likely that I will be kayaking with her this year, than sailing with her.

All good!
