Only the English would hold an annual cricket match on a sandbank, that is usually submerged, in the middle of a stretch of water three miles wide that also is a major shipping channel.

Uffa Fox described planning cricket there with several pictures in a book published in 1966
This blog post by Uffa Fox's great niece says that the first game was played shortly after the second world war and includes many interesting details.
Sandbank football (soccer) used to be an annual fixture on the river Tay in Scotland, between the two bridges at Dundee. It was like playing on a ploughed field. Don't know if that still goes on these days.
