It is indeed the Tillerman, wearing his trademark orange hat.
This happened during my stay at Bitter End Yacht Club last December. Racing Lasers on my first Sunday there. I won the first race. Then in the second race a little squall came through and my mast broke on a beat. Of course I fell out of the boat. "Luckily" the official photographer was on hand to capture this photo just as my head popped up out of the water.
Tillerwoman insisted on buying a 12x8 print of this image to frame and hang on the wall at home. I think this is her favorite picture of me.
For the record, I was towed back to shore, got myself a new rig, came back to the racing, and won the bottle of rum.
Wow, that's unexpected. Essentially brand new boats (2011) but with the old vang system. Is Tillerman Scheidt reincarnated? It's hard to bend the mast with that old vang system.
Yes, brand new boats but still with the old "classic" Laser rigging. The mast top section, I think, was not as new as the hull and had simply suffered from the usual corrosion around the rivet holding the collar.
BEYC does offer insurance against boat damage which I did take out. Not sure if they would have charged me for something like this anyway. It was essentially "wear and tear" and not due to any negligence on my part.

¡Tumbado!
Qué barbaridad!
Bottle of rum eh? Maybe its time to invent some new cocktails.
So what will it be, sir? A "broken mast" or a "quick dip in blue water"?

PS: Hope you took out insurance...
