Photo Quiz - Who is this sailor?

Who is this sailor?

Clue #1 - the hat is a humorous reference to his being a recreational sailor (I assume.)

Clue #2 - there is another clue in the photo to his main occupation.

Clue #3 - there is another clue in the photo to the place where he lived.

Have fun!

Clue #4 - he was part of the crew that won a prestigious international sailing event in 1905.

Clue #5 - the yacht club he was associated with is in a city that averages about 100 inches of snow a year.

You noticed! It does appear tht the Google spam filters are working better lately. Or perhaps the spammers have lost interest in my humble little blog? So I have switched off moderation for recent posts.

Not Phil Hartman.

Not Eliot Spitzer, but you are getting warmer.

Not Geraldo RIvera. But you are not a million miles from the right answer.

I have no evidence that this sailor ever gallivanted with the ladies of Larchmont. But you are on the right track. He did belong to a yacht club in New York state.

Just posted clue #4.

Wilson Marshall?

If this is correct, then perhaps Tweezerman knew the answer first: Wilson Marshall at Larchmont

Litoralis is correct in that there is symbiosis between Tillerman and Tweezerman on this quiz but I don't think Wilson Marshall (a great read from the NYT bu the way - thanks Litoralis) is the one. I will be interested where Tillerman found the picture.

Tweezerman is correct. This is not Wilson Marshall.

In good time I will reveal where I found the picture in the quiz. I also have found another picture of this gentleman, along with the other members of the crew he sailed with in 1905.

Thanks to Litoralis for his guess that the picture is Wilson Marshall who won the Kaiser's Gold Cup in 1905 and in the process set a speed record for sailing across the Atlantic. Unfortunately his answer is wrong.

But there is an interesting story related to his answer which may lead to another blog post.

By the way, the skipper on Marshall's record-breaking crossing was the famous Charlie Barr, also well known as a winning America's Cup skipper. Marshall was "merely" the owner of the boat.

Fred Mabbett?
Canada Cup

Ding ding ding. It is indeed the (not very) famous Rochester YC sailor, Fred A. Mabbett. More details and another picture or Mr. Mabbett in another post shortly.

I find it interesting that my readers guessed Fred A. Mabbett more quickly than they guessed the correct answer to my other recent photo quiz picture of a young Prince Philip sailing.
