I asked Paulien; a friend who was there. This is from the blurb:
The corollary of these globalisation processes is the tendency to seek shelter, as it were, in the supposed stability of traditionally defined identities and beliefs.
Thanks Andrew. I'm not sure I understand that answer, but it is kind of a clue as to why I thought Gimme Shelter was a very topical song choice for Friday.
Gimme Shelter is the favorite Rolling Stones song of someone who was in the news on Friday, someone who became famous partly for challenging "traditionally defined identities."
You are likely referring to our newest Nobel laureate, whose current shelter is at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
My wife, who is considerably smarter than me in many ways, immediately suggested this was the solution to your riddle when you first posted it, and I protested that she couldn't possibly be right for several brilliantly thought out and logically supported reasons, all of which I've now strangely forgotten.
You guys are right. On Friday it was announced that President Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize and, according to an interview he gave during the campaign, Gimme Shelter is his favorite Rolling Stones song.
Hmmm. You seem to like this guessing game of "what makes this song topical today"? Maybe I'll do it again.

Nice try Carol Anne. But no. There is a reason I posted this song on October 9 2009. Anyone else want to hazard a guess?
Could be that the decision to up the ante in Afghanistan is just a shot away
Nice one Claire. But not what I was thinking of.
You might for some unknown reason be talking about this conference at Amsterdam University - 8, 9 an 10 october 2009:
'GIMME SHELTER conference on the social and cultural dimensions of globalisation'
Wow. That's a very good answer Andrew. But not what I was thinking of. And why is that the name of the conference?
You did some volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity?
That would be a great answer if it were true... but I have to confess it's not.

Now you know as much as I do.
Hmmmm.

At first, I thought of Lennon (his birthday) but your last hint points to Obama. Cite: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/21472234/page/4
